Hedge Cutting and Trimming
Established hedges add to the beauty of any garden or property and deserve care and attention to maintain them looking good, dense and compact. Formal hedges have clearly defined lines and shape and as such require greater care to keep them in tip top condition. Frequent trimming is necessary. Wondering when to cut your hedge? Does it require just a trim or does it require cutting or pruning back. Sadler Tree Services can give you expert advice on how to keep your hedge in the best possible condition. We also advise and can care for neglected and overgrown hedges that require some ‘TLC’. You may have newly planted hedge and want to make sure that it gets the best start. For the first couple of years it will need pruning so that it develops the shape and density that you require. This is best carried out in late winter or early spring. The new hedge will develop strong and new growth. After the first couple of years all that is needed is for the hedge to be trimmed. This may only be once a year, say for a beech hedge or may involve two or three trims. The more formal your hedge the more trimming will be required. Here at Sadler Tree Services we advise that maintenance trimming is carried out between spring and summer.
Timing of pruning or cutting back of hedges must take into account the potential for nesting birds and if in any doubt delayed until the end of August each year. There is never any problem if cutting and pruning is done in late winter or very early spring. Hedge and even hand shears are fine for smaller hedges and topiary but for medium and large hedges, we always advise for ease of completing the task, that an electric or petrol hedge trimmer is used. It goes without saying that whatever equipment is used that it is well maintained, serviced and the blades sharp. Here at Sadler Tree Services all our arborists are well trained and have all the requisite personal protective equipment, certification and insurance for the work they do. Safety is our numberone consideration and should be yours if you use eletrical or petrol driven hedge trimmers. Unless trained and knowledgebale do not use a chain saw. All our staff wear safety goggles, ear defenders and head protection. Do not use powered tools when tired and never above your shoulder height. Steps and ladders need to be sturdy and offer a safe and level work platform. If you use electric hedge trimmers don’t forget to use a residual current device (RCD) and refrain from trimming or cutting in damp conditions. Good working practice is to keep the cable over a shoulder to prevent the cable being inadvertently cut. We advise that your hedge should not exceed 60 cms/2 feet in width and cut and then trimmed so that the base is slightly wider than the top of the hedge. This is called cutting the hedge to a batter and is best practice, so that light can reach all parts of the hedge including the base. We try to cease trimming in late August so the risk of bare patches is minimised. Yew can be trimmed into September. Always be careful if cutting back into conifers as they will not re-grow from old wood. If you own a hedge that borders a street or pavement there is always the problem of it overhanging and obstructing the highway.
